Weight and Health: Beyond the Numbers

Weight bias is the assumption that someone’s weight is their fault, and that thinner equals healthier. Spoiler alert!! it’s not that simple nor is it factual.

Weight is influenced by so many internal and external variables: genetics, hormones, environment, metabolism, sleep, mental health, medications, etc. Yet people in larger bodies often face judgement and stigma from society, from healthcare, and sadly from themselves.

Here’s why this matters:
– Weight stigma is linked to worse health outcomes, not better.
– It increases stress and mental health concerns which can impact health habits and makes people less likely to seek care.
– And it can actually make weight loss harder instead of easier.
In my practice, I meet patients often who’ve been dismissed, shamed, or told to “just eat less and move more.” They’ve carried the idea they’ve needed to “lose weight” for such long periods of time. They blame themselves.

Imagine if your body was met with compassion instead of criticism.

Health isn’t a number. Let’s shift the conversation from “weight loss” to well-being.
